TRAVEL TIPS

Know before you go

Zemithang is off the beaten path, so expect simple stays, winding roads, and spotty network — but that’s part of the adventure. Come with an open mind (and a warm jacket!), and you’ll discover rich culture, rare wildlife, and warm hospitality. Best of all, it’s a place where packing curiosity matters more than comfort.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

  • Best overall time: Spring and Autumn (March–May, September–November) for comfort, festivals, and wildlife.

  • For birders: Winter (Dec–Feb) is unmatched for crane sightings.

  • For solitude seekers: Monsoon brings raw beauty but also travel challenges.

GET YOUR PERMIT Indian citizens need an ILP, foreigners need a PAP. Apply for your permit in advance and carry photocopies for checkpoints.

START EARLY  Roads are isolated, and the sun sets early (especially in winter, as early as 4:30 PM). Plan to start your journey from Tawang very early in the morning.

PLAN & BOOK  Shared taxis are limited. Hiring a private vehicle (usually an SUV) from Tawang is the most practical option.

ACCLIMATISE Zemithang lies at 2,100–3,000 m. Acclimatise slowly, drink water, and avoid overexertion in the first days.

MOBILE AND INTERNET are unreliable — download maps and inform family beforehand. Only Airtel works in the region.

CARRY essential medicines, a good first-aid kit.

Other things to ring

  • Warm layers (it is cold year-round, especially the evenings)

  • Rain Gear (monsoons are unpredictable)

  • Cash (ATMs are unavailable in Zemithang)

  • Flashlight/headlamp

  • Personal medicines

  • Power bank

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Slippers for indoors

Keeping essentials handy ensures a smooth, comfortable stay.

BOOK YOUR HOMESTAYS Homestays provide simple but authentic accommodation — expect local food, warm hospitality, and wooden interiors.
